Keeping Fish Healthy One of the easiest ways to keeping fish healthy is to test the water regularly. If you have a lot of koi in your pond, try to be particularly vigilant about ammonia and nitrate levels. Have an aquarium or a sick tank available and be prepared to take quick action to remove fish that show any signs of ill health. Some diseases are highly contagious and can literally wipe out
your entire fish population if not caught early. Using a preventative water treatment such as Koizyme, shown at left, can help prevent disease in your pond and keep your fish healthy.
Koizyme is a biological formula consisting of naturally occurring bacteria, enzymes, and micro nutrients. When Koizyme is added to the pond water that is infected with the harmful Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or other harmful bacteria, Koiozymes, biological formula goes to work competing with these pathogens. The bacteria counts of these pathogens are reduced to such a low level that they will not have an affect on the health of your koi.
Used as directed, Koizyme will reduce the bacterial count to such low levels that they will not be a threat to your fish. It is impossible to remove all of the harmful bacteria in your pond, but using Koizyme on a regular weekly basis will keep these pathogens from harming your fish. I personally have faithfully used this product for several years and it really does work!
Be aware of predators. Installing protective netting or fencing is one option to keep fish healthy and You can slow down or discourage predators such as raccoons with dense plantings of grasses around the edge of the pond. They often can be deterred by a pond with steep sides. Don't worry too much about cats. Although they love to watch the fish, they are rarely able to catch them, and they don't want to risk taking a swim. Water loving dogs such as retrievers and others are more of a nuisance than a threat. They are not harmful to the health of your fish. They just knock over planters and sometimes puncture liners with their sharp nails. The great blue heron can grow to 6 feet tall and they are skilled fishers. Because they walk to the water and do not swoop down like seagulls, they can be discouraged with fishing line strung around the pond about 6 inches off the ground. They can also affect the health of your fish by causing stress among the fish that were not harmed. Remember, |
