Designing your Koi Fish Pond

Today with modern equipment, it is relatively simple to design a Koi fish pond of some kind.  However, it is important to adhere to basic principles so that even if plants are not involved your Koi fish pond will be properly positioned and be aesthetically pleasing to view.

If you are going to use plants in your Koi pond, then you will need to have full light if your plants are to prosper.  Plants in your Koi pond will also reduce algae growth.  When designing your fish pond it is also equally desirable that it should be well lit as what can be more magical than sunlight falling on a curtain of water.  If you are adding a fountain to the design of your pond, then you will want to position it so that the Koi pond is sheltered from the wind.  A breezy corner can disrupt the fountain and splash water water onto a path or patio.

Since it is important to get the shape of a koi pond and stream (if one is to be added) mark out the design on the ground with a white rope or hose before you begin to dig.  It is a good idea to walk away from it and live with your design for a few days.  When designing a Koi pond, make sure that everything works visually.  Also, with regard to the lay of the land, make sure your design is not in a low lying area that could lead to runoff from other areas of your yard or that of your neighbors.  This could essentially lead to dirt and/or pesticides being dumped into your pond.

Finally, there are other considerations that are as important as the visual ones.  For example, if you are adding a waterfall to your Koi fish pond design make sure it is set up so that when the pump is turned off the water still remains in the basin it spills into.  If when you design your Koi pond, you build the basins with a forward tilt, the water will drain away and you will have some very unhappy fish.  These are some of the design considerations that must be made.  It is important that you carefully think through your Koi pond design before  starting construction.
