Choosing Fountains
Choosing the right fountain for your pond is not difficult. You can find one that is right for just about any type of pond design. Top decide the best fountain for you consider not only it sound, style and size, but also the relationship to the pond as well. You will also need to keep in mind the effect on your plants and fish.
One of the greatest benefits of a fountain is sound. You will find that adding a fountain to your pond is a little like adding music to your landscape. It can mask traffic and other noises and its effect can range from the creeklike burble of a low geyser to the high musical tinkle of a fine spray or a deeper, rainy-day sound of a tall water column. Before installing your fountain, think about what type of sound will bring you the most enjoyment. A fountain can even be enjoyed without a pond even on the smallest patio or in the tiniest yard. You can enjoy the soothing sounds of a fountain just be installing a self-contained unit, or perhaps a wall fountain that spills into a small basin, or even a cobblestone reservoir. With the wall fountain shown at right, you can lure wild birds and add a striking focal point at the same time. Cascading water from the multi-tiered vessels creates a harmonic symphany of earth and water.
Spray or Statuary Fountains
If you are installing a fountain in your pond you will need to choose a style that suits its size and shape. Fountains of all styles come in two basic types: spray fountains (these are basically just water nozzles, or jets that spray water in different patterns) and statuary fountains, which spray water from some type of figure or sculpture. If you have a more formal design, you will want to use the more elaborate spray patterns and statuary, but for an informal pond not meant to mimic nature, a simple spout or geyser will look the best. If you have a wildlife pond, a fountain will look out of place unless you choose a simple model that bubbles up from the surface like a natural spring. Just about any spray-type fountain works with a modern- style home and pond. If you have a bungalow or a farmhouse with a small pond or basin you can use an old water pump. The OASE floating pond jet fountain shown at left creates an 11 foot lighted fountain for the large pond or residential lake. The built in pump with floating design means there is no extra plumbing needed. You can instantly add 4 star splendor to your showcase pond without the high maintenance. If you like the idea of this floating jet fountain but don't have a large enough pond to accomodate it, a smaller version is also available.
